Local artist Fay Gardener has donated one of her paintings to the Narromine Volunteer Rescue Squad.
President of the squad Graham Millgate said the group is always in need of extra funds.
“We’ve always got to upgrade equipment due to new regulations and changes in vehicles, and it costs having to update and upgrade our gear,” he said.
“It’s essentially us or the community who supply our funds.”
Mr Millgate said different community groups in town donate money, as well as in-house fundraisers such as barbeques and raffles.
“We spend more time in training than we do at accidents so if it can take time off fundraising we’re very fortunate, it’s something we’ve always got on our mind,” he said.
Mr Millgate said the squad always welcomes new members, who meet every second Thursday night for training.
“On any one night we’ll work on one topic, such as using cutters, ropes to secure something, entry to a vehicle or lifting equipment properly - it’s different every week. We are also involved with waterways and boat training, aerial support and observation work.”
The rescue squad assist police in search and rescue operations for people and animals.
“We can only be called out by police, ambulance or the fire brigade,” said Mr Millgate.
“We are by the community for the community - a helping hand anywhere, anytime.
“There isn’t any glory, we’re just here to help people because if I was in their position I’d like someone to help me.”
Members must be over 18 and possess a current first aid certificate to join, but Mr Millgate said they can help without it. “We can help them get that,” he said.
“Volunteers don’t necessarily have to be on the front line, they can also be behind the scenes to help out and assist with fundraising efforts.
Tickets for the painting are available at Duff’s Butchery and Macquarie Clothing, as well as outside the Narromine Newsagency on Saturday July 12, August 16, September 13 and October 18.
