19/07/2008 9:47:23 AM

A car involved in a police chase is believed to have caused a Hervey Bay accident in which two people died overnight.

Police said up to four vehicles were involved in the smash in which a man and woman, believed to have been in the same car, were killed.

Police said the crash occurred on the Esplanade in the suburb of Torquay about 11.20pm yesterday.

They said initial reports suggested a car was observed speeding a short time before the accident and a chase began but was called off.

Police said a 22-year-old man had been charged with the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

More charges are expected to be laid against the man who will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court today.
